How Much Does It Cost To Live Life Like ‘The Great Gatsby’?

The Great Gatsby opened over the weekend to great success. The film adaptation of the famous novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald debuted with $51.5 million box office sales, and although it wasn’t No. 1 for the weekend (that title belongs to Iron Man 3), it far exceeded Warner Bros. expectations of $35 million in the opening weekend.

So what’s creating all the fanfare? Some speculate movie-goers are anxious to see the newest Leonardo DiCaprio flick, while others may be interested to compare DiCaprio’s performance to Robert Redford’s in the original version from the 1970s. And as many have read the novel, they may be interested to see if Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann did the story justice.

One element of the novel Luhrmann certainly captured well on film is the opulent characteristic of the story’s protagonist Jay Gatsby. From the extravagant 1920s-era costumes to the posh mansion and the elaborate parties, The Great Gatsby models a lifestyle anyone would love to replicate. But how much money did Gatsby really need to live such a lavish existence? The following infographic details the money needed to buy the luxuriant elements of the film (commissioned by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk).

According to artist Nickolay Lamm’s calculations, the 40-acre mansion in the Hamptons, the parties and the costumes would cost about $34.3 million by 2013 standards, most of the sum paying for the estate. But hydroplane flights, motorboats, Rolls-Royce and personal shopper certainly don’t come cheap. Lamm even included fees for Gatsby’s gardener and station wagon that shuttled guests from New York for his parties. So although Gatsby would certainly be a 1-percenter, he definitely wasn’t one of Forbes’ top earners.
