More People Taking Social Media to the Toilet

Don’t expect a courtesy flush if Millennials are spending a long time on the toilet. According to new data from NM Incite, 32 percent of social networkers aged 18 to 24 connect with sites such as Facebook and Twitter in the bathroom.

Social media is truly everywhere in people’s lives,” NM Incite vice-president of social-media solutions told USA Today. It is so ingrained and has touched every facet of everything we do all day long. We are literally taking our phones with us to the bathroom and connecting on social media.

It’s not just young adults, however—15 percent of those ages 35 to 44 also Tweet from the toilet. And men are just as likely as women to log on to Facebook from the loo.

The numbers are likely to rise as more people connect to the Internet from mobile devices. According to Nielsen data, the number of PC-based Internet users dropped by 4 percent in the past year—from 213.2 million in 2011 to 204.7 million. But those using Mobile apps to access the Web increased an astonishing 85 percent during the same period, rising from just 55 million in 2011 to 101.8 million. And 30 percent of all time spent on mobile devices is spent on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

With so many people Facebooking from the toilet, it makes you think twice about borrowing someone’s phone…
