NYC Stylist Spends His Only Day Off Giving Free Haircuts To The Homeless

Mark Bustos is a hairstylist at Three Squares Studio, an upscale New York City hair salon that regularly gets celebrities in its chairs. Despite his posh surroundings, Bustos chooses to roam through the city on Sundays (his only day off) looking for people who might be down on their luck and in need of a new ‘do.

His approach is as genuine as it is simple: Bustos simply approaches someone he thinks may need a haircut and says, “I want to do something nice for you today.”

His love for cutting the hair of the less fortunate started on a trip he took to Thailand in 2012. While spending some time with his family, Bustos decided to pay the owner of a local barbershop some money and rent one of his chairs for the day. He spent the entire afternoon doling out free haircuts for kids in the area who otherwise couldn’t afford them.

Apparently, using his talents to help others made him feel good. He told the Huffington Post that “the feeling was so rewarding, I decided to bring the positive energy back to NYC.”

He also told the Huffington Post that he’s usually accompanied by his girlfriend, who takes care of getting his Sunday “clients” some food. He said that he intentionally cuts hair for the homeless in open spaces with lots of pedestrian traffic so people can watch. Bustos isn’t trying to ham it up, either; he just wants people to be inspired to do their own good deeds.

The hashtag he uses on most of his pictures sums up his actions beautifully: #BeAwesomeToSomebody
