14 Vintage Advertisements That Would Definitely Be Banned Today

Today’s advertisements may get complaints about being too sexy and too photoshopped, but they have nothing on the ads of yesteryear. Reddit user chestney posted a collection of ads that have it all: overt racism, sexism and even endangering babies. The poster titles them “Ridiculously Offensive Vintage Advertisements That Would Definitely Be Banned Today.”

The first ad in the album tries to sell ties by stating, “show her it’s a man’s world,” and depicts a woman on her knees serving a man breakfast in bed. It gets worse from there. One ad depicts a baby happily playing with a razor. Another depicts an American Indian saying, “My skin is dark but my heart is white.” A Volkswagen ad with a dinged-up Beetle reads, “Women are soft and gentle, but they hit things.”

Laugh and cringe your way through the full album below.

I remember quite a few of these, and they were controversial at the time. They did their job pissing off a certain part of the population that complained and got the ads all that much more free publicity. Does any of this sound familiar?

It's good to see we have made progress. The ads have been banned. Some people have sense. We are still fighting the attitudes behind the ads. Thanks for sharing this!!!

@DavidTaylor1 So these are the real deal huh???? It's totally made out of hate... So glad we're a bit better off now, but we still have a long way to go before we ALL "graduate" from these stereotypes and racism...

@NakaharaSunako @DavidTaylor1 We are far far far from "Better off" now. Now people are puss ies who are sensitive little babies who cant take a joke.  Nothing has improved.

See, that's just it. I don't think anything has improved. You have ads today, and I'm afraid I can't think of an example right this minute, but for instance, Mily Cyrus. Smart businesswoman, who got a whole lot of free publicity and accolades for being offensive in a way that pleased a certain element in society, just like those ads did in their day. Its just that there been a change about who you can offend.

@pinga24 - I happen to agree that we are a little over sensitive these days, don't even get me started on that everyone is special bullshit they did in school. However, there is a line between a joke and hate. You shouldn't degrade a person because of their culture/gender/race/religion, and it should especially not be advertised. That's hate. We are MUCH better off than back then.
