Florida Police Issue Lotto Tickets With Speeding Tickets
Some police in Central Florida decided to spread a little holiday cheer on Christmas Day. Cops in Melbourne, Fla. issued lottery tickets alongside their usual warnings and traffic tickets on Wednesday.
When we pull the motorists over, we’re also giving them the scratch-off tickets that the officers bought with their own personal funds,” Sgt. Jamie Rocque told Florida Today. “It’s something good to do in light of the holidays. We’re getting a lot of surprised looks… people don’t know what to say.”
By 1 p.m., officers had handed out more than 30 scratch-off lottery tickets to people caught speeding and committing other traffic violations on the typically light traffic day.
Officers haven’t heard of anyone winning big from the tickets. “I don’t know, but we wish them well,” Rocque said.
Officers were concentrated along the Wickham Road commercial corridor, an area that has had several recent crashes. Police are on the lookout for speeding, as well as other traffic violations like overly tinted windows.
Aside from handing out lotto tickets, officers treated yesterday like any other day. Rocque said, “There are no special operations, but we are basically doing road patrol because we have to keep the streets safe.”
