Marijuana Vending Machines: Coming Soon

If you ever wanted weed at your fingertips, that time may be coming sooner than you think. Gone are the days of discreetly texting your local drug dealer and paying him way too much money for an awkward conversation in the dark and some Maryjane.

Colorado and Washington were the first two states to fully legalize recreational marijuana use this past November, and entrepreneurs are already trying to make a profit from the newly lifted restrictions by creating marijuana dispensary machines. Bruce Bedrick, owner of Medbox Inc., thinks that weed from a vending machine is a ways off.

“Some people want to see this free-flowing marijuana. They want to go from federal and state ban to marijuana for everybody,’ Bedrick said, speaking with the Huffington Post. ‘We don’t believe that can happen. In order to gain respect and trust, it’s better to go through gradual, medical adoption.”

This may sound disappointing to those of you looking for a more convenient way to score weed, but fear not, for other entrepreneurs are far more optimistic. Medbox and Bedrick, mainly interested in serving marijuana to medical patients, are being cautious. However, CEO of Endexx Todd Davis is focused on a much larger market: recreational marijuana use.

Because, let’s be honest, for all the hullaballoo about legalizing medical marijuana over the past few years, there are two reasons this battle is being fought. First, a lot of people smoke weed, and they don’t do it to cope with their injuries. They get high because they want to get high. Of course legitimate companies want to make a profit off this newly-legalized product.

“It’s like a gold rush. Once significant investment capital comes to the market who knows?” says Davis. There’s something truly ironic about the thought of marijuana smoking hippies purchasing weed from a company based on entrepreneurial capitalism.

Still, there’s still a bit of a wait before you can consult the latest MJ vending machine at the local mall for your Friday night high. While Medbox already has a vending machine for medical marijuana, other companies like Endexx don’t expect to have a retail model for recreational use until early next year.

Will Colorado and Washington see an influx of potheads? I can definitely see people hopping over state lines for cheap, easy weed. The real question is how many states will legalize marijuana in the coming years. For now, go west young man.
