Reddit Sets World Record for Most Secret Santas

There’s a new world record holder for Secret Santa. Reddit’s annual Secret Santa gift-giving campaign earned the title of “Largest Online Secret Santa Game” this year with 58,504 participants. Averaging $25 per gift, Redditors spent more than $1.4 million on gifts for fellow members who signed up for the gift exchange.

Most participants were from the United States, although 126 countries, including Argentina, Figi and Russia, were represented in the program this year.

Reddit matched up members and encouraged them to engage in “non-creepy” cyber stalking to figure out an appropriate gift for their matches. Gifts included items such as a Post-Apocalypse care package, caviar, quilts, a MacBook Air, a “Star Trek” doorbell, South African candy and Idaho potatoes.

The Santas had until Dec. 14 to ship their gifts. When shipping costs—which totaled $400,000—was included in the total, Redditors spent $1.8 million on the program this year.

The previous record was also held by Reddit, but the online community doubled its previous number of participants this year.

The Secret Santa program represents the “positive power of the Internet by helping to facilitate acts of kindness all over the world,” said Reddit general manager Erik Martin.
