‘The Lonely Island’ Returns With ‘HUGS’ Feat. Pharrell

It was inevitable that when Andy Samberg returned to SNL this past Saturday to host the season 39 finale, it was going to be a doozy.

The SNL alum and current funnyman of the hugely popular “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” started off the May 17 show big with a monologue in which he attempted to break the record for most impressions done by a cast member, a bragging right held by former castmate Bill Hader. Seth Meyers joined him onstage to help Samberg with his quest, but the two were shortly followed by Hader—who still out-impressioned Samberg.

The alum-packed monologue was just beginning of the show, which saw appearances and reprisals of classic sketches like “Kissing Family,” in which Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen made their welcome returns.

The highlight of the show, though, may have been the new (and soon-to-be-classic, surely) SNL Digital Short, “HUGS” featuring the musical stylings of Pharrell. Oh yes, Samberg, you’ve done it again.

“Ha! You think we’re an item just because I gave you a hug?!” Samberg preludes the song.

Trick! You better think again.”

And that’s how you close another epic season of Saturday Night Live, folks.
