21 Reasons It Was More Fun Being A Girl In The 90s
Nostalgic for a time when social interactions existed mostly in the physical world and a fashion statement consisted of tying your boyfriend’s flannel shirt around your waist? When it seemed like it was actually fun to be a celebrity instead of horrifying? Maybe I’m skewed towards the past, but you might agree that it was more fun to be a girl in the 90s because:
1. Smarterchild made a great substitute when your real crush wasn’t on AIM.
2. Dick pics weren’t really a thing yet.
3. Wearing your boyfriend’s clothes made more sense, what with flannels and baggy jeans in style.
4. Butterfly hairclips—having your head covered in plastic, multi-colored butterflies was acceptable.
5. You didn’t have as much social media to make you feel bad about yourself and envious of other people’s lives.
6. Britney was a way better Disney product than Miley Cyrus.
7. Boy bands were far superior. The *NSYNC vs. Backstreet Boys debate has yet to get old.
8. Fruity chapstick was your greatest new toy (as opposed to an iPhone app).
9. The Spice Girls were the best girl role models a preteen could have.
10. Teen mags hadn’t completely run out of ideas.
11. They were also just better. (Remember when J-14 wasn’t just covered in Justin Bieber pics?)
12. Reality TV shows didn’t screw with your future aspirations.
13. Raving was actually fun.
14. “Clueless” gave every girl in the 90s something in common—a favorite movie.
15. MTV and VHI hadn’t gone completely down hill yet.
16. Chokers as a common fashion statement were badass.
17. Tankinis were a perfectly fashionable alternative to two-pieces if you felt weight-conscious during the summertime.
18. The female characters on “Full House” gave girls of all ages a sitcom character to route for, and the rest of the gang opened people up to the idea of alternative family situations.
19. Dunkaroos were a lunchtime staple.
20. Wearing Doc Martins made you actually a badass instead of one of millions of posers.
21. Mini backpacks were cool (and practical).
