A Father Short On Cash Handbuilt A Bassinet For His Kid 30 Years Ago… What That Kid Just Did Is Pretty Awesome
One man loves the bassinet he had as a baby, which his father constructed by hand. When he and his wife were expecting a baby of their own, he decided to recreate the beautiful bed for his own daughter.
Here’s his father with the original, 30 years ago. He used this photo as a template.
This end piece is all that remains of the original, which was used by the parents’ friends as they had babies of their own.
He used the remaining end piece as a template for his.
Here are the ends all cut out and ready for sanding.
The father is a pro, having made the original, so he helped out with the new one.
They drilled holes for the connecting pegs.
Then they hammered the pieces together.
The first piece is done.
Here it is compared to the original, identical except for the color.
Now he attached the trim, which will attach to the base.
The father-to-be explains, “Bottom rockers were cut out of ash so we had a hard dense wood.”
Here he connected the rockers to the end pieces, using the same peg tactic.
Up next are the side frame rails.
It took three swipes on the table saw for the father to get the groove just right.
He wanted to add flourish to the original design, so he made a template out of cardboard.
They cut the design into wood to make the side frame.
Here’s the completed piece.
Then they constructed the sides, using the designed piece and some thinner pieces of wood.
Once the sides were complete, the father-son team could really piece everything together.
Finally, they put in the last few pieces along the bottom.
Here’s the father-to-be next to the completed bed.
Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the two pictures, taken 30 years apart to the day. Leesburgcapsfan says that striking an identical pose (left leg in front, left hand grabbing right wrist with the thumb up) was just a coincidence.
Now father and son show off their work together. “Two generations all ready for the third.”
