One of the hardest things you’ll have to do as a manager or business owner, is fire people. Unless you’re cruel, in which case you might enjoy it. But for the general population, firing someone is something we dread doing. People hire individuals for the right reasons, with the hope that they will do well with their job. Relationships are formed and, when they don’t do well (or worse, completely flunk and sabotage the business), it can be an iffy situation.

Nick Woodman, the billionaire founder and CEO of digital camcorder company GoPro, has his own way of swiftly making the cut.

The best way to fire someone is to compassionately fire them,” he said in an interview with Bloomberg. “When you know that it’s not working out, it’s best to take decisive action. The worst way to fire someone is to let it drag on, because it’s not good for that person, because they’re not succeeding in their role, and it’s not good for the organization because it’s just not working.”

Woodman went on to say that one employee can make the biggest difference in the culture at a company, because everyone is connected. He compared the employees to the joints in the body; without one, everything else sort of dysfunctions.
