BMW Drivers Are The Rudest On The Road

According to a study conducted at the University of California, Berkeley, if you drive a BMW, you’re likely to be ruder than other drivers.

Paul K. Piff was one of five researchers at the Institute of Personality and Social who found a link between bad driving habits and wealth. The results were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The study reads: “As our findings suggest, the pursuit of self-interest is a more fundamental motive among society’s elite, and the increased want associated with greater wealth and status can promote wrongdoing.”

In other words, it confirms the complaints and obscenities people have thrown at BMW drivers for a while now.

Piff executed two field tests in California, where motorists are required by law to yield for pedestrians. During one test, Piff observed a crosswalk where a pedestrian would wait at the corner whenever a car began to approach. They also observed a four-way-stop intersection to see how often a driver would cut off another when it wasn’t their turn to go. Both showed that the more expensive the car model, such as the BMW, the more likely they were to not yield for pedestrians and to cut off other drivers at the intersection.

Piff said that while eight out ten drivers would “do the right thing,” wealthier drivers were less inclined to follow the rules.

You see this huge boost in a driver’s likelihood to commit infractions in more expensive cars,” he told the New York Times. “In our crosswalk study, none of the cars in the beater-car category drove through the crosswalk. They always stopped for pedestrians. One of the most significant trends was that fancy cars were less likely to stop. BMW drivers were the worst.”

And the UC-Berkeley study isn’t the first to seek out concrete evidence; a survey from the used-car website, Compucars.co.uk, found similar results.

The biggest faults motorists found with BMW drivers were unawareness of others and a lack of concentration,” the Independent said about the survey. “They were also seen as aggressive, rude and prone to road rage and often tended to drive too close to the car in front.”

Jalopnik also listed BMW drivers as at number five on its “Ten Car Brands With The Worst Drivers” list, saying, “Despite Audi making a strong push to be the Most Bought By Douches Automobile, BMW still has more clueless, overly aggressive, and surprisingly distracted drivers. Watch out for weaving E92 coupes.”
