Elon Musk Will Create A Supersonic Jet If Someone Else Doesn’t

Elon Musk loves to make technological advances. In a video chat with entrepreneurs and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, Musk said that the idea of a commercial supersonic aircraft appealed to him.

Musk referred to the electronic aircraft as the “ultimate form of transportation,” saying that it would be able to take off and land on a shorter runway, diminishing the necessary sizes of airports and thereby making it more accessible.

“I think once you get to the 1,000 mile range, you should take a supersonic plane,” said Musk. “You spend a lot of time climbing and descending [on an aircraft]. It would be better to figure some other means of doing it.”

He said the jet would be able to achieve vertical landing and fly high enough with a sonic boom similar to current planes and land closer to destinations—the result would be a plane would also have many environmental benefits

Big on making change, he added that “‘If somebody doesn’t do that, maybe at some point in the future, I will.”

According to Bloomberg, “At supersonic speeds, an aircraft could go from London to Shanghai in about seven and a half hours. That compares with more than 11 hours for a nonstop commercial flight.”

Musk gave other advice to entrepreneurs, saying that it was important to “seek critical feedback” when embarking on new ventures that will help find holes in your project. He briefly discussed SpaceX’s first three failed launches, saying that they were “too stupid” to realize the difficulty of getting into orbit. He also said that “there’s no place like Silicon Valley to start a technology company,” but that location doesn’t guarantee success.

Musk has several projects in the works keeping him busy, including Tesla, SpaceX, and Hyperloop, a transportation system that will transport people from San Francisco to Los Angeles at a rate quicker than a plane. The open source plan for Hyperloop is being revealed this Monday.

At the Dll conference Musk said Hyperloop would be a “cross between a Concorde, a railgun, and an air hockey table.” During the video chat, he said the Hyperloop was inspired by California’s high-speed railroad project, which he didn’t think was secure of necessarily high-speed and actually more expensive than other alternatives.

The hyperloop is something that would go effectively faster than the speed of sound,” he said during the chat. “It does involve a tube, but not a vacuum tube and very low friction.”
