When you are set to make $5.6 million for the next NBA season, you can do things like take a $450,000 armored truck out for a night on the town. Knicks guard J.R. Smith did exactly that according to the New York post, taking a Gurkha F5 to Catch, a restaurant in the Meatpacking District on Thursday.

Here’s a pic from J.R. Smith’s Instagram of the F5 he was seen driving around. It is unclear whether or not Smith is the owner of the vehicle.

The Gurkha F5 is a para-military vehicle created by Terradyne, Inc. of Canada. Fans of Vin Diesel’s cinematic masterpiece Fast Five likely recognize the Gurkha F5 as playing a main role in the movie. The F5 is used by police and military agencies all over the world, but it is mostly used by Canadian and Australian police agencies. Gurkha F5s are heavily armored vehicles that can carry a full crew of 8-10 people. The F5 is built on the chassis of a Ford F-550 and typically contains Ford’s 6.7-liter V8 Power Stroke diesel engine. This four-wheel-drive behemoth is over 18 feet long, 7 feet wide and 8 feet high. Oh, and it weighs 19,000 damn pounds.

The thing about driving around a massive armored truck is that everyone recognizes you. Good thing the armor plating on the truck is rated to stop 7.62mm AK-47 rounds as well as .44 magnum bullets. If J.R. ever needs to take this thing off-road, he’s got it covered. The 4×4 capabilities of the vehicle won’t really get tested in New York City.
