James Franco Directs and Stars In Samsung Promotional Film
James Franco, the prolific actor known for his work in films such as “Spiderman” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” has once again granted his star power to Samsung to promote the brand’s new Galaxy Camera. The device allows users to shoot and share photos and video straight from the device.
In the campaign, Franco starred in and directed an online film to promote the camera. Plus, during the holiday season, he will give fans a sneak peek inside his personal and professional lives, using the camera to share moments he spends with friends and family.
Franco says he teamed up with Samsung because it’s a “good relationship” and he likes the products. From the set of his new movie “Palo Alto Stories,” he told Creativity that he’d been showing off the camera to everyone on set.
“I signed on knowing that they have certain needs,” he said. “The films are designed to show off the product, so the pieces we do are designed to do that.”
In the promotional film, Franco ventures about a birthday party, trying out the Samsung device on guests. He snaps footage of a young couple, only to have a photo bomber interrupt the shot. Undeterred, Franco simply uses the Galaxy Camera to drop out the interloper and shares the photo online. Franco continues performing similar actions, many humorous, throughout the party, while providing commentary.
“I want to show people using [the product] the way they actually would use it,” Franco said.
The promotional film is Franco’s third collaboration with Samsung.
“I like being part of the creative process, because it involves most of the things I love, like collaborating with others, framing, telling a story,” he said. “Plus, I get to work with the best toys when I do commercials, so that’s fun.“
