Last Shipment Of Twinkies Heads To Chicago

This is it: The moment American junk food lovers have been dreading since rumors first started circulating in November that Hostess would close. The last box of Twinkies.

Jewel-Osco reported this morning it just received the last shipment of Hostess products in the country. The company said the shipment—delivered to Chicago—includes 20,000 boxes of Twinkies and 5,000 boxes of Ding Dongs, Zingers and Orange Cupcakes.

We received a call from our Hostess rep saying that one of the plants in Georgia had some left and would we want any,” Jewel parent company Supervalu spokesman Mike Siemenas told the Chicago Tribune. “We said we’d take the entire shipment.

Jewel is selling the Hostess products at regular price, with no limit on quantity, while supplies last. Be sure those courtesies won’t apply when the same products show up on Ebay later on today.

In fact, Twinkies delivered to Jewel’s West Irving Park store were quickly snatched up by customers waiting to snag them within an hour of its 7 a.m. opening. Today’s final shipment was distributed between more than 150 Chicago-area stores from this morning and 11 p.m. tonight, a fitting end to the lovable snack cake that saw its start in Schiller Park, Ill. in 1930.
