Scientists Aim To Reduce Greenhouse Gases By Studying Cow Flatulence

What is the biggest contributor to global warming? Is it car exhaust? Coal plants? Or could the secret to curbing global warning actually be as simple as eliminating cow farts? Believe it or not, Australian researchers are set to find out just that.

Cows, as do humans, produce the greenhouse gas methane when they pass gas. Methane contributes to global warming. As livestock increases worldwide, so does its methane output.

The Sustainable Agriculture Flagship plans to install wireless electronic trackers into cows’ digestive tracks. The trackers are embedded with infrared sensors that will monitor the cows’ flatulence, and measure the amount of methane they produce. The researchers hope to ultimately find which diet best minimizes the cows’ methane output.

Just go ahead and start giving cows some good ol’ Pepto Bismal. That could be the solution to all global warming woes.
