Siri Coming To Two Chevrolet Vehicles Next Year

Siri, turn on the ignition. Siri, drive me to 555 Main Street. Okay, so we’re not exactly advanced to autopilot technology, but two Chevrolet cars will integrate Apple’s virtual personal assistant Siri into their infotainment systems in early 2013. Siri will be available to Apple 4S and Apple 5 customers who buy a new Chevrolet Spark and Sonic, General Motors announced today at the Los Angeles International Auto Show.

The voice-controlled assistant will be available wirelessly through the vehicles’ Chevy MyLink systems, allowing users to make Eyes Free voice-activated calls, access calendars, listen to and compose messages and queue songs from their music libraries. The Eyes Free mode will not allow Siri to answer “complex questions that require displaying a Web page,” however. Plus, to prevent driving distraction, the iPhone screen will not light up when Siri is interacting with the user in the vehicle.

“It says a lot about our commitment to small-car customers that Chevrolet has announced that Siri Eyes Free capability will be available in the Spark and Sonic well before the luxury brands,” said Cristi Landy, Chevrolet’s marketing director for small cars, in a statement. “Safe, easy, reliable and portable connectivity is a top priority for our customers, and Siri complements MyLink’s existing capabilities.”

In fact, Siri is only one of the many benefits General Motors touted for its electric Spark. The $25,000 five-door EV was introduced just before the Los Angeles Auto Show, and GM hopes to roll it onto sales lots next summer. Although the Spark will only be sold in two states initially—California and Oregon—it will also be available to consumers in Canada, Europe and South Korea. Plus, California customers will be able to drive the energy-efficient Spark in high-occupancy vehicle lanes. According to GM, the Spark stands apart from other electric vehicles since it can be fully charged in seven hours with a 240-volt outlet, but it can be quickly charged to 80 percent in just 20 minutes.

Although the Spark offers Siri compatibility for Apple 4S and Apple5 users, the MyLink radio is also compatible with other smartphone models. Users can then access apps such as BringGo for navigation, as well as TuneIn internet radio, Pandora and Stitcher.
