The Real Reason This Man Is Dressed In A Tutu Will Warm Your Heart

The Tutu Project

Meet Bob.

In 2003, Bob Carey found himself in possession of a camera and a pink tutu. He put on the tutu — nothing but the tutu — and took a few pictures of himself. The pictures were a fun way for Bob to express himself, and they gave his wife Linda a good chuckle.

Just six months later, Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer. She initially beat the cancer, only to have it come back in 2006.

Bob’s self-portraits became more important than ever. They turned into a way to support Linda through her struggles and put a smile on her face.

Each photo depicts Bob donning his pink tutu in a new place: in a field of cows, on a snowy road, in an empty parking lot.

Bob explains on the Tutu Project website, “Sometimes the very best thing—no, the only thing—we can do to face another day is to laugh at ourselves, and share a laugh with others.”

Now he’s sharing a collection of his pictures in a self-published book called Ballerina with the goal of helping others with breast cancer. Net proceeds for the book go to the Carey Foundation, the nonprofit which the couple founded together in 2012.

The Carey Foundation helps breast cancer patients pay for expenses that aren’t covered by insurance. Proceeds pay for things like transportation to treatment appointments, counseling, wigs and childcare.

You can buy Ballerina for $50 here. You’ll receive a heartwarming laugh, and you’ll help a woman in need fight her cancer.
