Wilson Martins Coutinho, known as Protector Wilson, has dedicated his life to helping protect animals who have been abused, injured or mutilated. Pictures from one recent rescue show the process of nursing a dog back to health from the brink of death. The rescue is extreme. The dog’s “before” pictures, posted on Reddit by HeySupFrank, are completely heartbreaking. But the pictures of the recovery will restore your faith in humanity.

The abandoned dog was found living in a makeshift home. He had cardboard, newspaper, a tarp above him, and some food left in plastic containers. Someone was apparently trying to care for him, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

His haunches were completely torn up, with large bruising and significant exposed flesh.

He appeared extremely emaciated and malnourished.

This close-up of his injury is just painful to look at.

Still, it appeared his spirit was intact, as he allowed Protector Wilson to pet him and show affection.

Protector Wilson carted him off from his miserable home.
