Twitter Offers $1 Million in Free Advertising for Small Business Saturday

Twitter is getting in on the holiday shopping excitement this weekend and offering $100 advertising credits to 10,000 merchants in recognition of Small Business Saturday Nov. 24. The social network company announced Nov. 21 it would give away the free credits to the first 10,000 eligible businesses that apply for the program. The businesses can then use the credits to purchase Promoted Trends and Promoted Accounts on Twitter, which will allow their content to be featured more prominently on Twitter. In order to qualify, businesses need only be based in the United States, have an active Twitter account and be a new Twitter advertiser.

Twitter organized a similar campaign in February, in partnership with American Express. At that time businesses benefiting from the advertising credits included New York’s Hampton Coffee Company and Philadelphia’s Whipped Bakeshop. According to Social News Daily, Hampton Coffee Company used the credits for a Promoted Account and saw its followers increase by 50 percent within just a few weeks.

Interested businesses need only register before Small Business Saturday. Those among the first 10,000 will be notified within the next few days. This year marks the third anniversary of the day shoppers are encouraged to visit local independent stores rather than spending all their holiday money at large chain retailers.
