White Police Officers In Texas Beat Black Woman Over Unpaid Traffic Ticket (Video)

In Jasper, Texas, a city where the first African-American police chief was fired last year and is now suing, another serious act of racism recently took place in the form of police brutality. Officers Ricky Grissom and Ryan Cunningham beat 25-year-old Keyarika “Shea” Diggles last week in the police station, where she had been taken for an unpaid $150 traffic ticket.

The beating was particularly brutal considering the minor nature of Diggles’s offense. A video recording from the police station shows the two white officers attacking the young black woman with excessive force. This disturbing look into the violence reveals that Diggles did not even fight back as the officers repeatedly slammed her face into the counter.

Warning: The video provides a disquieting window into the brutality committed by the two officers, who were later fired from the Jasper police force.

Diggles’s attorney, Cade Bernsen, described to Yahoo News:The amount of force used was abominable. She got her hair pulled out, broke a tooth, braces got knocked off…it was brutal.

As shown in the video, Diggles was on the phone with her mother asking for help in paying the overdue ticket. Allegedly, Officer Grissom acted polite at first, until he heard Diggles’s say she might not be able to get all the money needed at that moment. At that point, the officer dramatically changed his tone, aggressively going after the young woman along with his fellow officer, who showed up shortly after Grissom ended Diggles’ phone call. An argument between Grissom and Diggles preceded the second officer’s arrival.

After Diggles’ complaint against the Jasper Police Department was more or less ignored, city council member Alton Scott got the tape of the attack and sent it to a local television station, after which it quickly spread across the Internet.

Grissom and Cunningham are now being investigated for criminal charges.
