Yahoo To Auction Off ‘Premium’ Domain Names

It appears that Marissa Mayer, the former Google genius turned Yahoo CEO, is revamping the company’s Internet property. The web giant has announced that it will be auctioning off some of its premium domain names beginning today.

Apparently Yahoo tends to snatch things up, then forget it owns them, as the domain names were mostly bought during the Internet’s initial “wonder years.” Some of the domain names appear more comical and simplistic than premium, as the company owns names like cyberjokes.com, pleasure.com, and raging.com. In other categories, the Internet giant appeared to take a liking to food based domain names, with entries like crackers.com and sandwich .com appearing on the list. In the sports category, options include jockeys.com and blogsport.com.

Don’t think that just because the names are funny, simple, or because they have been in Yahoo’s forgotten storeroom for years, that you will get a price break on them. In fact, these domains will be auctioned off at price ranges starting at $1,000 and reaching as much as $1.5 million – how’s that for a cyberjoke?

For the average entrepreneur, sticking with GoDaddy or a similar service is probably a better option. For prices ranging from $0.99 to $15.00 one can purchase a custom domain name. However, if you really want to be noticed and you have the cash to spend, Yahoo will absolutely be glad to lighten your pockets for one of these domains.

There is a list of domain names that will be included in the auction available on the auction site. The list has around 220 domains on it already. I suppose we will have to wait and see who buys cursed.com, but for now, I will personally stick with GoDaddy and a domain name I can afford to buy.
