Want to improve your kids’ brushing habits or find out what hard-to-reach areas you’re missing? There’s an app for that.

French company Kolibree has created the first connected electric toothbrush, which sends brushing information to a user’s smartphone and lets each user track statistics and habits. Up to five people can connect to the same account, so parents can find out if their children’s teeth are getting enough attention.

The app gives statistics like how long you brushed for, whether you reached every area of your mouth, and whether you employed a good up-and-down motion.

“You create this incentive around brushing,” spokesperson Renee Blodgett told CNN. And that’s what makes the toothbrush so useful: immediate feedback lets users recognize and correct brushing techniques without having to wait for regular dental checkups.

The app rewards you for good oral hygiene: It scores your technique and lets you earn badges for accomplishments. For an added level of motivation, you can share the results on social networks or send statistics to your dentist.

Of course, a smarter toothbrush won’t fix dental hygiene problems, and it’s still up to users to brush well. “While Kolibree doesn’t proclaim to solve periodontal disease or suggest it can keep cavities or gingivitis at bay, the better you take care of your teeth, the more likely you can and will avoid serious problems,” the press release explains.

The Kolibree toothbrush, unveiled at this month’s International Consumer Electronics Show, isn’t available just yet. The company website says it’ll begin taking orders on Kickstarter in the coming months, and the product itself will be available in the fourth quarter of this year. Each toothbrush will cost between $99 and $200 depending on the model.
