Hue Toaster Makes Toast The Perfect Shade of Brown

The toaster: Possibly the simplest of kitchen appliances hasn’t changed much in the past 100 years. Sure, you can now find toasters with 21st Century technology like digital timers, but the basic mechanics of the toaster are the same as they’ve always been. Plus, a 5 level on one toaster may cook the same as a 2 on another model, and they toast various types of bread inconsistently. No more. The Hue toaster uses photo sensors to determine the color of the bread it is toasting. Once the bread reaches the pre-selected level of crispness—based on color—up pops the perfectly toasted slice of bread.

Touted as the “smartest toaster” ever, the Hue toaster can even vary its toasting time based on the type of bread dropped in the slot. Therefore, if a slice of frozen bread is dropped in, Hie will thaw the bread first, then continue its basic toasting operation. It will also adjust for thicker slices of bread and bagels that sit closer to its heating elements.

Inventor Basheer Tome designed the Hue toaster for his undergraduate industrial design class at Georgia Tech. Currently in prototype stage, it has not yet been rolled into production.
